How to Avoid Being Overcharged for Your Foreign-Owned LLC Filing
The same Form 5472 filing can be quoted at wildly different prices — and the people who get charged the most are usually the ones least able to check: owners abroad, new to U.S. rules, working in a second language. Opaque pricing feeds on exactly that. You don’t need to become a tax expert to protect yourself; you just need to know the warning signs.
Warning sign 1: there is no published price
If a preparer will only tell you the cost after a call, and the number seems to change from person to person, that is a choice, not a necessity. A standard filing has a standard price. When it’s hidden, it’s usually because it moves with how much they think you’ll pay.
Warning sign 2: the price depends on you, not the work
Be careful when the quote seems to track your income, your revenue, or how little you seem to know — and walk away from anyone charging a percentage of your refund. The work of a Form 5472 is the same whether your company made $0 or $200,000. The price should follow the form, not your bank balance.
Warning sign 3: you’re charged just to find out what you owe
Working out which forms apply to you, for which years, and what they cost is a sales step. It should be free. If someone bills you before they’ve even told you what you need, that’s a flag.
Warning sign 4: “starting at,” then surprises
A price with no ceiling and no written scope is where the extra charges hide — added after you’ve paid and it’s awkward to leave. A real quote is a fixed number, in writing, before work starts, with anything that could cost extra named up front.
Warning sign 5: pressure, or promises no one can keep
Manufactured urgency (“pay today or the penalty explodes”) and guarantees that the IRS will waive your penalty are both red flags. Relief is the IRS’s decision — no one can promise the outcome, and honest preparers say so.
How much should filing Form 5472 actually cost?
There is a published, fixed number for it — that is the point. At Laramie Ledger Tax a current-year Form 5472 with pro forma 1120 is a flat fee, a past-due year is a flat fee that includes the reasonable-cause statement, and a personal 1040-NR business return starts at $649. You can see every price before you talk to anyone, on the pricing page. If a quote is several times a published fixed price, with no extra scope named in writing, that gap is the warning sign — not your situation.
What safe looks like
You should be able to see the price before you speak to anyone; get it fixed in writing before any work; pay nothing to learn what you owe; and have every document and message kept in one place you can open yourself. That is exactly how Laramie Ledger Tax runs it, on purpose, for foreign-owned U.S. LLCs: published prices, fixed up front, no charge to work out what you owe, no percentage of a refund, everything in your portal.
